In loving memory of D'Angelo (1974-2025)

If you remember where you were when you first heard "Brown Sugar" in 1995...
If you wore out your "Voodoo" CD in 2000 because streaming wasn't a thing yet...
If you defended "Black Messiah" as one of the greatest albums of the 2010s...
If you cried when we lost him in October 2025...
This night is for you.
This isn't just dinner. This is a gathering of the neo-soul generation—Gen X and Elder Millennials who grew up with D'Angelo's music as the soundtrack to our lives. This is Houston's music culture coming together to celebrate a legend, honor his legacy, and support the fight against the disease that took him from us.
On December 28, we don't just eat. We remember. We celebrate. We vibe. Together.

October 14, 2025. The day the music world stood still.
D'Angelo—born Michael Eugene Archer in Richmond, Virginia—passed away at 51 after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. The neo-soul pioneer who gave us "Brown Sugar" (1995), "Voodoo" (2000), and "Black Messiah" (2014) was gone.
For Gen X and Elder Millennials, D'Angelo wasn't just an artist. He was a movement. Influenced and parralleled to Prince, he redefined R&B. He made vulnerability masculine. He proved that Black music could be experimental, spiritual, sensual, and socially conscious all at once. He influenced everyone from Maxwell to Frank Ocean to The Weeknd.
His music was the soundtrack to our slow dances, our late-night drives, our moments of joy and
heartbreak. He shaped how we loved, how we felt, how we moved through the world.
And now, he's gone.
But his legacy lives on.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers, with a five-year survival rate of just 12%. In the Black community, the statistics are even more devastating:
Black Americans are 50-90% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than other racial groups
Black men have the highest incidence rate of pancreatic cancer in the United States
Late-stage diagnosis is more common in Black communities due to healthcare disparities
Survival rates are lower for Black patients compared to white patients
D'Angelo's death at 51 is a painful reminder of how this disease disproportionately impacts our community. But his family is turning grief into action.
The D'Angelo Estate Pancreatic Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Black Boy Joy Foundation, is fighting back—funding research, supporting patients, and raising awareness about early detection in Black communities.
A portion of every ticket sold supports this critical work. When you join us on December 28, you're not just celebrating D'Angelo's music—you're contributing to a future where fewer
families experience this loss.

Intro: Each course is inspired by the songs that defined a generation. Chef Kyndra's Latin-island fusion mastery meets the emotional depth of neo-soul's greatest artist.
COURSE 1: "Brown Sugar" (1995) - The Song That Started It All. Brown sugar cured salmon on rice paper pillows and crispy shallots with garnish—honoring the debut single that introduced the world to D'Angelo's genius and launched the neo-soul movement.
COURSE 2: "Spanish Joint" (2000) - Elegant. Timeless. Unforgettable. A croquette medley...empanada and Spanish inspired—as graceful and refined as the ballad we slow-danced to at every wedding, prom, and anniversary.
COURSE 3: "Cruisin" (1995) - Bold. Raw. Unapologetic. A Vegetarian dish of burnt leeks with black lentils and a sauce—capturing the intensity of the "Voodoo" era when D'Angelo pushed boundaries and challenged the industry.
COURSE 4: "Chicken Grease" (2000) - The Most Sensual Song Ever Recorded. Buttermilk fried quail with gumbo gravy and garnished with dots of collard green puree, sweet potato puree and corn bread crisp —a dish as intimate and unforgettable as the iconic track (and that video we all remember).
COURSE 5: "One Mo Gin" (2000) - Socially Conscious. Powerful. Necessary. Oxtail tortellini with black truffle with oxtail bourbon glaze —honoring the politically charged artistry of "Black Messiah" and D'Angelo's commitment to justice.
DESSERT: "Lady" (1995) - Sweet. Soulful. Redemptive. Pink lady apple pavlova parfait—a sweet finale that reminds us why we fell in love with his music in the first place.
Each course paired with curated beverages and accompanied by D'Angelo's music, plus tracks from Angie Stone, Erykah Badu, Maxwell, Jill Scott, and the neo-soul legends who shaped our generation.
